Aureo sale 269, lot 298

This specimen was lot 298 in Aureo sale 269 (Barcelona, July 2015), where it sold for €190 (about US$246 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1793. Carlos IV. Madrid. MF. 1 escudo. Leves rayitas y golpecito pero buen ejemplar. Parte de brillo original. MBC+/EBC-. (Spain, Charles IV, one escudo of 1793, Madrid mint. Light scratches and a nick but still a nice example, partial mint luster, very fine to extremely fine.)"

This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1788-1801 for Charles IV. This date is common. Unlike the Latin American mints, which concentrated on producing eight escudos, the Spanish mints turned most of their gold into two escudos.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3,36 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14030, KM 434, Cal. 492.
