Aureo y Calicó sale 422, lot 2716

This specimen was lot 2716 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 40 € (about US$52 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1725. Felipe V. Madrid. A. 2 reales. PHILIPPUS V/LUDOVICUS I. Algo alabeada. MBC/BC+ [slightly bent, fine to very fine]." Altho this variety shows PHILIPPUS V punched over LUDOVICUS I, no Madrid two reales of 1725 are known with Luis's name. The obverse die must have been recycled from 1724. Philip V abdicated in favor of his son Luis in January 1724, only to resume the throne on Luis's death in August. Two reales were struck for Luis in 1724 at Madrid, Seville and Segovia. This type was struck for Philip V 1716-25 and again 1730, 1735, 1737 and 1740.
