This specimen was lot 23232 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1]Ponterio noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Shilling, 1946. PCGS PROOF-64 Secure Holder. Mintage of only 150 pieces and highly sought after as such. Lightly toned and attractive." The shilling was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1930 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This type varied from later issues (KM 17.2, struck 1926-30) by the presence of a circle of beads around the standing figure on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: 27,000 + 150 proofs, a better date.
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.800 fine silver, 23. 6 mm diameter.
