South Africa 1946 shilling

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 23232

This specimen was lot 23232 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description^[1]Ponterio noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. Shilling, 1946. PCGS PROOF-64 Secure Holder. Mintage of only 150 pieces and highly sought after as such. Lightly toned and attractive." The shilling was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1930 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This type varied from later issues (KM 17.2, struck 1926-30) by the presence of a circle of beads around the standing figure on the reverse.

Recorded mintage: 27,000 + 150 proofs, a better date.

Specification: 5.65 g, 0.800 fine silver, 23. 6 mm diameter.
