This specimen was part of lot 29120 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), which sold for $705. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI Proof Set 1947, the nine coin set comprising KM23-31, sold in the original blue case of issue." The shilling was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1950 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This low mintage date was saved so it is not rare. It is the last date to bear the obverse legend "GEORGIUS VI REX IMPERATOR."
Recorded mintage: 7,184 plus 2,600 proofs.
Specification: 5.65 g, 0.800 fine silver, 23.6 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 28, KM-PS19 (proof set).
