Scotland (1637-38)-B 1/2 merk
The first specimen was lot 37431 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/2 Merk, ND (1637-42). Edinburgh Mint. Charles I. PCGS VF-35. Briot's Issue. From the Richard August Collection." The second specimen was lot 37432 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 1/2 Merk, ND (1637-42). Edinburgh Mint. Charles I. PCGS VF-35. Briot's Issue. From the Richard August Collection." The first specimen has the mintmark 'B' above the crown; the second specimen has the 'B' at the end of the legend. Half a merk was one third of a Scottish pound or eighty pence or VI shillings and 8 pence, as marked on the coin.
