This specimen was lot 37433 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. 40 Pence, ND (1637-42). Edinburgh Mint. Charles I. PCGS VF-25. Third Coinage; Falconer's First issue. From the Richard August Collection." Forty pence was one sixth of a Scottish pound or one quarter merk. The reverse motto, "· SALVS · REIPVB · SVPREMA · LEX ·", means "The safety of the State is the supreme law".
