Sincona sale 38, lot 1422

This specimen was lot 1422 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 9,000 CHF (about US$10,794 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Charles I. 1625-1649 Unite o. J. (1637-1642). Edinburgh. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. Kl. Feld der Vorderseite minimal bearbeitet. (kingdom of Scotland, Charles I, 1625-49, undated unite, Edinburgh mint. Very rare, Extremely fine, Small area on obverse slightly smoothed.)"

This scarce piece was struck by Nicholas Briot, who attempted to introduce milled coinage to Great Britain. This specimen is overweight, perhaps because it is a pattern. The unite was worth twenty shillings in England but probably considerably more in gold starved Scotland.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 9.92 g.

Catalog reference: Seaby 5531, Fr-56; KM-57.
