Saxony 1630 6 ducats Fr-2697
This specimen was lot 25167 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $9,900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Incredible Ducat Multiple Celebrating the Augsburg Confession, GERMANY. Saxony. 6 Ducats, 1630. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. NGC AU Details--Tooled. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession. Rather impressive and enticing, this VERY RARE example offers a crisp, clear strike with fairly unhandled surfaces despite its details designation. Golden-yellow throughout and a monumental chance for the advanced collector of world gold issues and their multiples. From the Augustana Collection." This multiple ducat is one of an extensive series (1/8 thaler thru 12 ducats) honoring the Augsburg Confession of 1530, the founding document of the Lutheran Church. Ironically, altho Saxony was and is stoutly Lutheran, the elector's descendent Augustus converted to Catholicism in the 1690's to seize the Polish throne and the dynasty remained Catholic until the collapse of 1918.
