Stephen Album sale 50, lot 970

This specimen was lot 970 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXONY: Hans Georg I, 1591-1656, AR thaler, 1630, lovely original color, XF, ex Dr. Robert A. Rosenfeld Collection." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1620-38. It is not rare but is less common than issues of the previous reign. Other Saxon thalers for 1630 include KM 411/Dav-7605, KM 412/Dav-7605A and KM 413/Dav-7606, all celebrating the centennial of the Augsburg Confession.
