Saxony 1619 1/8 thaler
This specimen was lot 982 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €180 (about US$248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Georg Ier (1615-1656), AR huitième de Taler, 1619, Dresde. Émission du Vicariat de l'Empire. D/ L'électeur à cheval à d., ten. une épée sur l'épaule. Sous le cheval, son écu. R/ Inscription en douze lignes. Champs repolis au droit. Très Beau à Superbe. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John George I, 1615-56, silver eighth thaler of 1619, Dresden mint, for the vicariat. Obverse: the elector rides right, holding a sword, his arms below his horse; reverse: an inscription in twelve lines. Obverse polished, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"
This vicariat one-eighth thaler was issued on the occasion of the death of the emperor Matthias.
