from the Stack's Bowers June 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71191

This specimen was lot 71191 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. Taler, 1858-A. Berlin Mint. Karl Alexander. PCGS PROOF-63 Cameo. Quite RARE as a proof, this alluring crown presents a charming cameo nature through delightful frosting and mirrored brilliance. A few light hairlines are noted on the obverse, but entirely consistent with the grade level." This type was issued 1858, 1866 and 1870 and is the last thaler from this locale. Double thalers (Dav-846) also exist. A few coins exist from the Second Empire (1871-1918) but are rare.

Specification: 18.50 g, 0.750 fine silver, 34 mm diameter.
