Altenburg in 1789

The first specimen was lot 822 in Steve Album Auction 53 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $390. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXE-ALTENBURG: Johann Philipp, Friedrich, Johann Wilhelm, Friedrich Wilhelm, 1603-1625, AR thaler, 1624, an attractive specimen, F-VF." The second specimen was lot 74604 in Stack's Bowers May 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $317.20. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Old-Altenburg. Taler, 1624-WA. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Philipp & Three Brothers. EF Details--Mount Removed, Cleaned. From the Greyhound Collection." This state was created in 1602 from Saxe-Weimar for Johann II and survived until the death of Frederick William III in 1672, when it was claimed by Saxe-Gotha. This type was struck 1623-25 and is fairly common. The auctioneers misattributed it as Dav-7369, which has the mintmaster's initials on the obverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 43 mm diameter, the first specimen 28.65 g.

Catalog reference: KM 302, Dav-7371.
