Saxe-Altenburg 1625 thaler Dav-7373
This specimen was lot 4551 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,503 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Johann Philipp, Friedrich, Johann Wilhelm und Friedrich Wilhelm II., 1603-1625. Reichstaler 1625, Saalfeld, auf den Tod des Herzogs Friedrich. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, kl. Prägeschwächen, winz. Kratzer, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Johann Max Böttcher, Auktion Möller 47, Kassel 2007, Nr. 944. (duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, John Philip, Frederick, John William and Frederick William II, 1603-25, thaler of 1625, Saalfeld mint, for the death of duke Frederick. Extremely rare, handsome patina, slightly weakly struck, about extremely fine.)"
This state was created in 1602 from Saxe-Weimar for Johann II and survived until the death of Frederick William III in 1672, when it was claimed by Saxe-Gotha. This rare type was struck in 1625 along with the common KM 302/Dav-7371, KM 320/Dav-7371A (with WA added) and KM 322/Dav-7374 (Death of Friedrich VIII).
