Saxe-Old Gotha 1624-WA thaler Dav-7431
This specimen was lot 825 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €1,300 (about US$1,769). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE-COBOURG-EISENACH, Johann Casimir et Johann Ernst (1572-1633), AR Taler, 1624 WA, Cobourg. Droit: B. cuirassé à droite, tenant un bâton de commandement. La date dans le champ. Revers: B. cuirassé à gauche entre deux écussons. Très belle patine aux reflets colorés. Superbe (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimir and John Ernest (1572-1633), silver thaler of 1624, Coburg mint. Obverse: armored bust to right, holding a baton, date in field; reverse: armored bust to left, between two shields. Very nice reflective toning, extremely fine.)"
This type is listed for 1623-29. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
