Salzburg 1783-M thaler Dav-1263
This specimen was lot 70149 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1783-M. Hieronymus Graf von Colloredo-Walsee. NGC MS-62. A well struck Taler, exhibiting a great deal of flash in the obverse fields, and just a slight strike weakness on the centers to interrupt the otherwise sharply detailed design. The obverse surfaces are blessed with patches of orange to olive toning hues." This type was struck 1772-86 and is common in circulated condition. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
