Salzburg 1784-M thaler Dav-1263
This specimen is lot 1510 in UBS sale 84 (Basel, January 2010). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH, Salzburg, Erzbistum, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Taler 1784. Brustbild im Talar nach rechts. Rv. Wappen unter Kardinalshut auf gekröntem Wappenmantel, unten die Jahreszahl. Vorzüglich" (Austria, Archbishopric of Salzburg, Hieronymus von Colloredo, 1772-1803. Taler of 1784. Obv: bust facing right. Rev: arms under cardinal's crown and mantle, date below. Extremely fine).
The listings in the SCWC are a little confused; the picture shown for the obverse of KM 465 matches this coin but the reverse is closer to that of KM 434. The SCWC states that Dav-1265 was struck 1789-1803 (not 1784) and is common; we will let the reader decide. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, .751 troy oz ASW, this specimen: 27.98 grams.
