Salzburg 1785-M thaler Dav-1263
This specimen was lot 3163 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Taler 1785. Vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, thaler of 1785, extremely fine.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type of 1772-86 is common. The Archbishop is most remembered as the first patron of Mozart but grew irritable when Mozart demanded better status than a mere employee.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, this specimen 27.95 g.
