Salzburg 1782-M 6 ducats Fr-885
This specimen was lot 31086 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. Salzburg. Hieronymous gold Medallic "1200th Anniversary of the Archbishopric" 6 Ducat 1782-M MS63★ Prooflike NGC. By F. Matzenkopf. Type 2, with date in Roman rather than Arabic numerals. An eye-catching commemorative produced to an undeniably medallic standard, the rims, thick and mildly beveled, acting as boundaries to the welled-up glassy mirrored flash of the surfaces before reaching the dramatic relief of the central features. Apparently unknown to Probszt in this size (he only cited a 2 Ducat), this is the sole example of this weight and module for the type that we have been able [to] locate, with the added artist's signature beneath the portrait suggesting a clearly donative or presentation purpose for the piece." The archbishop only rarely issued this denomination but this occasion called for a single ducat (Fr-887), a double ducat (Fr-886), a six ducat (shown here) and a twelve ducat (Fr-884).
