(archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, klippe one-ninth thalers of 1669-73. Three pieces, two have been plugged, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1669, 1672-73 in klippe format (shown here) and 1673 in round format (KM 222). One ninth thaler was eight kreuzer or two batzen. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
