This specimen was part of lot 2930 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €1,400 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. Reichstaler 1668, 1669, 1670, 1671, 1672, 1673, 1674, 1677, 1685. Dav-3508 (9x); Probszt 1652, 1653, 1654, 1655, 1656, 1657, 1658, 1660, 1662; Zöttl 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002. 9 Stück., Zum Teil mit kleinen Fehlern, sehr schön und besser. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, thalers of 1668-85. Nine pieces, some with minor defects, very fine and better.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1668-77, 1680, 1685-86 and is common. Thalers were also struck for Max's predecessor Guidobald in 1668. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.
