This specimen was lot 33336 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria: Salzburg. Maximilian Gandolph 1/4 Taler 1669 MS62 PCGS. Handsomely toned with the lightest weakness on the highest points of the design. Sold with old dealer tag." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1669, 1672, 1675 and is a better type.
