Künker sale 384, part of lot 2888

This specimen was part of lot 2888 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €460 (about US$595 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-1668. Einseitiger Pfennig 1658, 1659, 1660, 1662, 1666, 1667. Probszt 1563, 1564, 1565, 1567, 1571, 1572; Zöttl Type 2 = 1866, 1867, 1868, 1870, 1874, 1875. 6 Stück., Meist sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Guidobald of Thun and Hohenstein, 1654-68, uniface pennies of 1658-67. Six pieces, mostly very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1655-68 and has a very low catalog value. In the mid seventeenth century, one thaler was 72 kreuzer and one kreuzer was four pfenning. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1.04 g.

Catalog reference: KM 174, Probszt 1508; Zöttl 1830.
