Sincona sale 23, lot 3103

This specimen was lot 3103 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 210 CHF (about US$264 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Salzburg, Erzbistum, Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-1668 Taler 1666. Vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, Guidobald of Thun and Hohenstein (1654-68), thaler of 1666, extremely fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1654-68 and is one of the commonest thalers of the seventeenth century.
