Salzburg 1673 1/9 thaler
This specimen was lot 2942 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €190 (about US$246 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. 1/9 Taler 1673. R Hübsche Patina, sehr schön +. Es handelt sich hierbei um eine beschnittene 1/9 Talerklippe. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, one ninth thaler of 1673. Rare, handsome toning, choice very fine. This specimen was made from a cut down klippe.)"
The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type was struck 1669, 1672-73 in klippe format (KM 214) and 1673 in round format (shown here). Fifteen kreuzer was one quarter gulden. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
