Künker sale 384, part of lot 2945

This specimen was part of lot 2945 in Künker sale 384 (Osnabrück, March 2023), which sold for €70 (about US$91 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Max Gandolph von Küenburg, 1668-1687. 2 Kreuzer (1/2 Batzen) 1674, 1675. 1,71 g und 1,68 g. Probszt 1692, 1693; Zöttl 2036, 2037. 2 Stück., Sehr schön. (archbishopric of Salzburg, Max Gandolph of Küenburg, 1668-87, two kreuzers or half batzens of 1674-75. Two pieces, very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. This type is not listed in the SCWC. In the seventeenth century, Salzburg was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. The archbishopric was secularized in 1803 and passed to Austria in 1814.
