Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70150
SB1021-70150r.jpg

This specimen was lot 70150 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1655. Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein. PCGS EF-45. A wholesome and lightly circulated Taler, with sharp detail throughout, and dark gray toning. A few minor marks appear in the fields but nothing overly distracting." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1654-68 and is common. Except for the change of ruler, it is virtually identical to the prior type (Dav-3504) issued 1623-53. The superseding type (Dav-3508) was issued 1668-86.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-3505, KM 162.
