Sincona sale 18, lot 3159

This specimen was lot 3159 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Taler 1654. Gutes sehr schön. (Germany, archbishopric of Salzburg, thaler of 1654, good very fine.)"

The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1654-68 and is common. Except for the change of ruler, it is virtually identical to the prior type (Dav-3504) issued 1623-53. The superseding type (Dav-3508) was issued 1668-86.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.41 g.
