This specimen was lot 226 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $23,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. 6 Ducat, 1655. PCGS AU-58 Secure Holder. Exceptional 1655 6 Ducat Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein (1654-68)." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.
