This gold quarter ducat was minted in Salzburg in 1655. The specimen was lot 2606 in Goldberg sale 59 (Beverly Hills, May 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria - Salzburg. ¼ Ducat, 1655. Guidobald von Thun und Hohenstein, 1654-1668. Seated saint. Reverse: Arms. Nice original lustrous example. NGC graded MS-62." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers.
