Salzburg 1653 thaler Dav-3504
This specimen was lot 50323 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $478. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. Salzburg. Taler, 1653. NGC MS-62. Paris von Lodron (1619-53). Toned with iridescent highlights in portions of legend." The Archbishopric of Salzburg was an ecclesiastical state between Bavaria and Austria and usually ruled by a Hapsburg client. In the seventeenth century it was blessed with a number of productive silver mines and the prince-archbishop was a prolific issuer of coins, particularly thalers. This type was struck 1623-53 and is common. It was superseded by a virtually identical type (Dav-3505) issued 1654-68.
