Russia 1872-SP HI ruble Dav-289
The first specimen was lot 72732 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1872-CPB HI. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A delightful, problem free example of the type, offering an attractive cabinet tone and underlying brilliance, as well as a charming strike." The second specimen was lot 72171 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[2] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1872-CNB HI. St. Petersburg Mint. Alexander II. NGC MS-62. A handsome, sharply struck Ruble with soft, frosty luster. The obverse surfaces are toned a dark gray with pleasing rainbow hues at the peripheries, while the reverse is an even dark gray. A very eye-appealing coin for the grade." This type was struck 1859-85 in respectable quantities but not so many as the prior type (Dav-283).
