This specimen was lot 25401 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "Alexander II gold 5 Roubles 1872 СПБ-HI, Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle / Date and value in beaded circle, MS66 NGC. Superb strike with gleaming luster over prooflike surfaces and no significant flaws. A superior Alexander II gold 5 Roubles." This type is listed for 1859-85 and is fairly common in circulated condition. In 1886, the standard was revised to match the French twenty francs d'or, resulting in a weight reduction to .186 troy oz (see KM Y42).
