Russia 1842-SP AC ruble Dav-283
This specimen was lot 25382 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $3,220. The catalog description[2] noted, "Nicholas I Rouble 1842 CПБ- HГ, Crowned double-headed Imperial eagle / Crowned date and value in wreath, Bitkin 195, MS64 NGC. Well struck with gleaming luster and near mark-free surfaces. An exceptional example of the type." This type was struck 1832-58 in large quantities but is today very rare in nice condition. The preceding type (Dav-282) is very similar but with a "wings down" eagle. An 1842/1 overdate exists but is awarded little premium. The auction catalog description incorrectly notes this as mintmaster "HГ" (active 1825-41) but the coin (and the SCWC agrees) states mintmaster "AЧ" (active 1842-43).
Recorded mintage: 4,965,000.
Specification: 20.73 g, 0.868 fine silver.
