Russia SB819-23627r.jpg

This specimen was lot 23627 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. 10 Kopek (Grivennik), 1842-CNB AY. St. Petersburg Mint. Nicholas I. NGC MS-63. A faint golden iridescence blankets this Choice Uncirculated piece, complemented by flashy underlying luster. The fields are notably reflective and contrast the more frosty design elements. Areas of isolated softness are noted near the border and a trivial planchet flaw lies close to center on the reverse." This type was struck 1832-58 in large numbers and this is a fairly common date. The SCWC mentions the overdate but awards it no premium. In 1859, the silver was reduced to 0.750 fine and reduced again to 0.500 fine in 1867. The mintmaster was Alexander Belozerov.

Recorded mintage: 300,000.

Specification: 2.07 g, 0.868 fine silver, .028 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-C164.1; Bit-362.
