This specimen was lot 22547 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $4,112.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nicholas I Proof copper 1/4 Kopeck 1840 CM, Crowned monogram / Date and value, Proof 65 Red and Brown NGC. Superbly struck, with reflective fields. The surfaces are free of distracting marks and there is considerable remaining mint-red color. Very rare." This type was struck 1840-43 at Ekaterinburg and St. Petersburg. Mintages are generally large but the SCWC does not note the existence of any proofs. The quarter kopek or polushka was the lowest denomination Russian coin.
