This specimen was lot 1560 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,997.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1799-CMMB. Paul I (1796-1801). NGC AU-58. Pleasing old cabinet toning." The SCWC records this product of the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ) for 1796-1801, with three mintmasters recorded for 1799. The type is not rare in circulated condition. The 1801 is recorded in Davenport as Dav-278 but is the same type. It is lighter than the ruble of Catherine II (Dav-1686) but higher in purity, resulting in the same amount of silver.

Recorded mintage: 3,124,000 (including all assayers).

Specification: 20.73 g, 0.868 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C101a; Bit-35, Dav-1688.
