The first specimen was lot 21780 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description[1] noted, "Paul I Rouble 1800 CM-OM, Crowned Russian letter П in cruciform, I in center/Ornamental cartouche with legend, AU50 NGC. Well struck, with gray patina and no significant imperfections. A very scarce type in nicer conditions." The second specimen was lot 30578 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[2] noted, "Paul I Rouble 1800 CM-OM UNC Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Obv. Cruciform crowned Imperial monogram with the date. Rev. Four-line legend in garnished tablet. Sharply strick for the issue, with lustrous, argent gray patina over surfaces displaying light hairlines and few other significant flaws. A visually pleasing example of this conditionally scarce type." The SCWC records this product of the St. Petersburg mint (СПБ) for 1796-1801, with two mintmasters recorded for 1800. The type is not rare in circulated condition. The 1801 is recorded in Davenport as Dav-278 but is the same type. It is lighter than the ruble of Catherine II (Dav-1686) but higher in purity, resulting in the same amount of silver. The similar poltina (KM C99.1a) is rather scarce.
Recorded mintage: 1,870,000.
Specification: 20.73 g, 0.868 fine silver, 0.666 troy oz ASW.
