Heritage sale 3082, lot 34681
Russia H3082-34681r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34681 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "Russia: Elizabeth Rouble 1754 СПБ-IM AU53 NGC, St. Petersburg mint. Scott portrait. Light gray toning, with small edge flaws. The first-year issue of this short-run type." This type was issued from St. Petersburg (shown here) and Moscow (KM C-19c.1) and is fairly common. The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. The massive portrait of the empress can only have been drawn from life. The rubles of Peter I were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.

Recorded mintage: 1,183,000 including C19b.5 and assayer ЯІ.

Specification: 25.85 g, 0.802 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C19C.2, Bit-273, Dav-1679.
