Heritage sale 3064, lot 33664
Russia H3064-33664r.jpg

This specimen was lot 33664 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Elizabeth Rouble 1753 СПБ-ЯІ AU53 PCGS, St. Petersburg mint. An attractive specimen with minimal marks and lovely eye appeal. The reverse virtually looks like that of a mint-state coin, with strong luster and almost imperceptible wear." This type was issued from St. Petersburg (shown here) 1751-54 and Moscow (KM C-19.2) and is fairly common. The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. The massive portrait of the empress can only have been drawn from life. The rubles of Peter I were about 28 grams but shrank to 20 grams by the end of the reign of Catherine the Great.

Recorded mintage: 605,000 (including assayer IM).

Specification: 25.85 g, .802 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-C19b.5, Bit-271, Dav-1677.
