This specimen was lot 24735 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "RUSSIA. Ruble, 1754-MMA EI. Elizabeth (1741-61). PCGS EF-45 Secure Holder. Lovely old cabinet tone." The coinage of Russia of the eighteenth century is a confusing and fascinating subject. This type, issued 1754-57 from St. Petersburg and 1751-58 from Moscow, varied from the prior type by the addition of the assayer's initials. The rubles of Peter II were about 28 grams but this type seems to be only 26 grams.
Recorded mintage: 1,183,000 (assayers EI, MB and IP).
Specification: 25.85 g, .802 fine silver.
Catalog reference: C-19c.1; Bit-134, Dav-1678.
