Sincona sale 12, lot 31

This specimen was lot 31 in Sincona sale 12 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 310,000 CHF (about US$400,954 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Rouble 1707, Kadashevsky Mint, G. «Small head»!! Portrait by Solomon Gouin. Extremely rare!! 60 roubles acc. to Petrov!! 75 roubles acc. to Trapeznikov!! Minor planchet defect, otherwise attractive good very fine with original colour. From the outstanding collection of Count Hutten-Czapski! The famous rouble of Peter the Great, which will be recognised at first sight for its unique small headtype. This unique combination makes this very small head 1707 rouble the most valuable and desirable one." This rare type is among the first crowns of Russia. Davenport lists at least four other rubles for 1707 but this one is the rarest.
