Künker sale 353, lot 3722

This specimen was lot 3722 in Künker sale 353 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRANDENBURG-PREUSSEN, PREUSSEN, KÖNIGREICH, Friedrich II. der Große, 1740-1786. 4 Kreuzer 1755, C, Cleve. Prägung für die westlichen Landesteile. Mit veränderter Vorder- und Rückseite. R Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Winter 50, Düsseldorf 1985, Nr. 500. (Germany, kingdom of Prussia, Frederick II the Great, 1740-86, four kreuzer of 1755, Cleve mint, struck for the western provinces, with modified obverse and reverse. Rare, planchet flaws, very fine.)"

The four kreuzer, or batzen, is a denomination familiar to Swiss collectors and other areas of South Germany. Cleve, in the far west of Germany, near the Dutch border, struck this type 1754-55. The plate coin in the SCWC shows a distinctly different reverse than the example shown here. The SCWC notes that one thaler was forty batzen.

Recorded mintage: 1,718,000 for 1754-55.

Specification: billon, this specimen 2,04 g.

Catalog reference: KM 57 (listed under Cleve), Olding 288 b; Kluge 291.2.
