Stack's Bowers NYINC sale, lot 685
Prussia Stacks Jan15-685r.jpg

This specimen was lot 685 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $440.63. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Prussia. Taler, 1750-B. NGC AU-58. Finest certified specimen. Toned. Nice strike. From the Rockaway Collection." This type, issued from Breslau and Berlin 1750-52, is the second thaler issued by Frederick the Great after the very rare type of 1741 (Dav-2581). Despite the bold label, "EIN REICHS THALER," it was not, being reduced in weight and fineness. In 1750, the mints were reorganized and the mintmaster's initials dropped in favor of mintmarks (A = Berlin, B = Breslau, C = Cleve, D = Aurich, E = Konigsberg, F = Magdeburg and G = Stettin).

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 22.72 g, 0.750 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2583; KM 256.
