This type was struck in Lisbon in 1898 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the discovery of India. It was part of a set that included a 500 réis and a 1000 réis. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This 200 réis piece, the size of a French franc, is common as it was saved.
