This type was struck in Lisbon 1898 only. This issue, along with a similar 200 and 500 réis, commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of India. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. This 1000 réis piece was commonly called a coroa. The last silver coroa was issued in 1916.
