This specimen was lot 76155 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 500 Reis, 1898. Lisbon Mint. Carlos I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details." This type was struck in Lisbon 1891-1908. King Carlos ruled from 1889 until his assassination at the hands of an anarchist in 1908. His son Manuel II ruled for only two years before he was deposed and the Republic established. The last five hundred réis piece was struck in 1910, the year the king was overthrown.

Recorded mintage: 1,320,000.
