This type was struck in Lisbon 1898 only and is one of the more common of Portuguese silver coins. This issue, along with a similar 200 and 1000 réis, commemorated the 400th anniversary of the discovery of India. A regular issue 500 réis also exists for 1898 (KM 535).
Recorded mintage: 300,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.917 fine silver, .368 troy oz ASW.
