Portugal 1838 1000 reis
This specimen was lot 31522 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "Maria II 1000 Reis 1838/6 UNC Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC. A fairly scarce date, with a mintage of just 3,959 pieces, and a variety featuring a portion of the '6' under the final digit of the date. Though exhibiting some light cleaning, the hairlines are not overly obtrusive, and a good deal of luster still remains. Assuredly, one of the finest of this date which one could hope to obtain. A similar specimen, but with some obvious issues on the obverse, realized a hammer of €800 in late 2014." Shown is a silver thousand réis or coroa of 1838; the overdate is not noted in the SCWC. It was struck 1837-45 in very limited numbers. Maria II reigned 1834-53 after overcoming the usurpation of her uncle Miguel I. The next silver coroa struck (KM 539 of 1898) was only 25 grams.
Recorded mintage: 3,959.
Specification: 29.6 g, 0.917 fine silver, .872 troy oz ASW, 36.5 mm diameter.
