This type was struck 1837-39 for Maria II of Portugal (1834-53) as part of an extensive series of copper issues which included five, ten, twenty (vintém) and forty réis (pataco). This type is listed by the SCWC under Portugal's pre-decimal coinage but was struck after the conversion in 1836. It seems likely that the decimalization did not affect the coppers.
