Ponterio sale 164, lot 968

This specimen was lot 968 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it sold for $1,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 7,500 Reis (Peca), 1834. Sharply struck. NGC AU-58." The peça, originally a 6400 réis piece, was raised to 7500 réis in 1825 and struck in that form until 1835. In 1836, the coinage was reformed and made decimal. Other peças exist for Maria II but are much rarer.

Recorded mintage: 32,000.

Specification: 14.34 g, .917 gold, .423 troy oz AGW.
